taking the first step

It's not easy to face results that you may not be satisfied with.

We promise it's normal to feel disappointed and confused.

Take the time to process your feelings, talk to a trusted friend or adult and know that your feelings are valid. However, with time, look to slowly come to terms with reality and find clarity of thought. Here is a mini guide on how to consider your options post results & ensure that retaking is the right choice for you !

Consider your options

1) Look at the entry requirements and compare your grades to the IGP’s for various university courses. Should your grades be close to the 10th percentile, you still stand a decent shot at admissions. Remember that ABA/Discretionary admissions with a decent portfolio can always boost your chances.

2) There are 3 main categories of universities : Local, Private and Overseas.

Take your time to look into the entry requirements for each and consider :

  • If the courses appeal to you

  • If you are ready to commit academically and financially

A few of the Private Universities you could consider include : Kaplan, SIM, The PSB Academy, Curtin University, James Cook University and MDIS. If you're interested in Universities overseas, The Campus Advisor is a great starting point to explore international options.

3) Another option would also be considering to apply to a polytechnic should you believe that the A Level curriculum is not suited for you.

Committing to retaking need not be your immediate course of action,
especially if your grades still allow you to pursue a certain course in university.

Here is a guide on how to consider your university options :

That being said, we still believe it is wise to apply for a retake as a safety net. Apply during the window SEAB opens for private candidates as by doing so, you would not have to worry about paying a higher fee for a late application. In the case that you are offered a university course which you would like to accept, you can always withdraw your application to retake.

*On an additional note : In the case that you are offered a place in a certain course, do take time to carefully consider if you’re sure of committing to your course on a financial and academic level. Do not see it as a ticket to escape retaking - instead, carefully consider if you are sure that the course offered fits your own ambitions !

After looking at the possible options, take the time to reflect on how you feel about retaking. While there is always the possibility of being offered a place in a university, we advise you to be mentally prepared to retake. In fact, the sooner you decide upon retaking as your final choice, the better.

Consider the following steps to prepare yourself for a retake :

1) Analyse your current grades and identify where you may have faltered

2) Check SEAB's website to confirm you can retake all your subjects and consider changing your subject

    combination if required

3) Decide if you’d be retaking as a private candidate or going back to your JC

Even in the case you do not meet the requirements to retake in your school, do reach out to your tutors to see if your        school could support you ! (eg : tutors willing to provide consults/share notes etc.)

4) Ensure that you have all the resources you need (ie. notes, practise papers, contacts of tutors etc.)

     More on taking charge

5) Prepared to take stock of your own learning, be disciplined and take steps to create a game plan for your subjects

     (More on taking charge)

Seek support

Making the decision to retake is an emotionally and mentally challenging process. Do not bottle up your feelings. Talk to a trusted adult, especially your JC tutors, who can guide you through the decision making process. Not everyone may be supportive of your decision but do not fret - stick close to those who motivate you and wish the best for your academic endeavours. At the latest by May, you should have a clear idea whether you’ll be retaking. Here is when you would need to solidify your stance and work towards fully committing towards retaking. Before anything else, make sure you are clear of WHY you are making the choice to retake and what is your desired intended outcome.

Must I retake all my subjects ?

You have to retake 3H2 subjects and GP again in one sitting. You do not have to retake your H1 subject if you're satisfied with your H1 grade from your initial attempt. The subject can be combined with your second set of A Level grades.

4.png

Can my previous grades be considered for uni applications ?

[subject to confirmation - Our Team is in the process of contacting admissions offices to confirm if only your latest grades can be used]

2.png

Can I opt to retake while waiting for an offer and then cancel plans to retake once I have been accepted to a school ?

Yes. You can withdraw your application for a retake and get a refund if you do so by 2nd July 2021 ! (check the SEAB wesbite for the date depending on your year)  Hence, we advice you to still apply for a retake as a safety net while waiting for uni application results

Do I need tuitions?

Tuitions is definitely not mandatory to do well. However, we do believe that for arts subjects, it's crucial to have someone who can give your feedback on your essays. Also, if you feel that you inherently lack discipline, then tuitions is a great way to help keep stock of your learning !
TLDR ; we recommend having tuitions

3.png

Is it possible to study for a retake while still pursuing a uni degree ?

It is possible for you to enrol in a degree while studying separately for a retake. However, we do not recommend this as it would be incredibly difficult to manage school and retaking A's. Retaking would require 100% of your commitment and dedication. If you are already in uni, you could consider applying for a gap semester/year to retake A's !

4.png

Will retaking as a private candidate have any impact on my uni applications after my new set of results ?

No it will not !
You will be given an equal shot at uni applications & scholarships

2.png

By when is it ideal to confirm retaking ?

The earlier the better.
After results, do apply for a retake immediately as a safety net. By Mid-April to latest May, you should have a clear idea on whether you'll be retaking
